Sekaten Fair -

Sekaten, derived from Arabic language "syahadattaini", is the traditional night market held annually in the month of Maulud (3rd Arabic/Javanese calendar) to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. The night market is held in North Alun-alun in the Kasunanan palace. The opening ceremony is marked by the releasing two big 'gamelans', traditional Javanese musical instruments, from the palace and then brought to the Grand Mosque. The event is ended up with the "Grebeg Maulud" ceremony marked with the presentation of two sets of Nasi Tumpeng (large bamboo platters of cone shaped rice surrounded by various side dishes and vegetables) which are brought to the Grand Mosque by the Kasunanan Surakarta Royal family followed by the soldiers. After a sequence of religious rituals, the two sets of Nasi Tumpeng are then distributed to the visitors. The people believe that by eating the rice, they will be blessed by God.
Waicak -

The Waicak is the greatest Buddhist religious event to commemorate the birth of Sidharta Gautama. Seeing the Waicak ceremony at Mendut and Borobudur temples is an impressing experience. The Buddhist monks from countries all over the world come to Borobudur and Mendut to pray together. The ceremony is held on the evening of Purnama Sidi month, which is initiated with Dharma Padha holy bible reading contest. The religious procession starts at Mendut temple in evening of May 19th, 2008 until in the morning of May 20th, 2008 with the ceremony of walking around Borobudur temple three times led by Buddhist monks and followed by their adherents. Afterward, the procession continues in the afternoon by walking from Mendut temple to Borobudur temple, stopping by at Pawon temple. In the evening, the reception is held and ended up with ritual at Borobudur temple.

Maleman Sriwedari/The Selikuran Eve -

One out of several events to celebrate the upcoming holy Ramadhan fasting month is the traditional night market called Maleman Sriwedari or the Selikuran Eve. This event is held to commemorate the attaining of Prophet Mohammad's first revelation from God that is the Holy Koran. The highlight of the fair takes place in the 20th day of Ramadhan or October 2nd, 2007 evening. The procession starts from the Kasunanan palace and ends at The Sriwedari park from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M..-Selikur (Javanese language) means twenty one. |
